A little highlight film and below, a few frames I grabbed at my sister-in-law’s wedding… mostly I was shooting video (while the paid photog did the heavy lifting) but I just couldn’t resist snapping some stills. The light was wonderful and the couple looked amazing. So for video, I was shooting my regular Canon 60D and Tamron 18-270 VC combo but on this day I also had my grandfather’s vintage Nikon 85mm f/2 to add some drama. The adapter ring to fit it to the Canon body works great but you only have manual focus and aperture. Totally fine for video, but stills can be a little tough to pull accurate focus at f/2!
This single shot was taken just prior to the couple shot above and Tonya was in exactly the same spot. I just ran around to the other side of the sunlight. At 85mm, the crop factor on the 60D frames it more like a 135mm so a medium shot is about 12 feet away.
My amazing wife here – admiring how pretty her niece Nikki is over there posing for me (reluctantly) by the tree (below). This is the Tamron 18-270 again. There’s a Hoya circular polarizer on in order to knock the exposure down a couple stops and keep video from requiring f/8 or higher in all this sunlight. I’ve had the polarizer laying around for years unused and while considering a fader ND, realized I already have ‘half’ of one. I was thinking that the polarizer would soften up or muddy the stills but I didn’t notice any problems at all. In fact, as much as I love my L glass I really have to keep in mind how fantastic the Tamron really is.
And finally, here’s Nikki… moments after telling me she didn’t want her picture taken!
